Dirty Dancing and Abortion

All credit for this post goes to Owen Benjamin who did a great D-Live about this film.
Before I begin, I have to confess that as a young man growing up in the 80’s, I fell for this movie and others like it. Flashdance, Footloose, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, Top Gun, the list can go on for ever = these were at best morally bankrupt, but I would now argue, evil to the core. I’m horrified at my 16 yr old self and the garbage I was titillated by. Horrified.
First a quick outline.
- Morally bankrupt girl 1 spreads herself and gets pregnant.
- Morally bankrupt girl 2 supplies the money and means for MB1 to get a back alley abortion
- MB2 then does a lot of suggestive dancing with Morally bankrupt guy 1 … to the joy of pedo’s everywhere. (He was supposedly only 3 yrs older, but the visual difference in age is a lot more suggestive than what the storyline calls for. Her movie name is Baby if that makes the pedoline more clear for you.
- MB1 is bleeding badly and needs help.
- MB2 gets her father involved who is a doctor. He does not condemn the abortion itself, but rather condemns his daughter for hiding the abortion from him. See what they did there? Abortion is not bad. Not being open about the abortion is.
- MB2 father forbids her to have anything further to do with MBG1
- MB2 disobeys her father and, of course, spreads her legs for MBG1 … they are in love you know.
- The movie ends with MB2 and MBG1 in a suggestive dance that everyone, father included approves of. All things evil are now good and approved.
So. A movie geared for teens, in an age of hyper-sexuality with the moral lesson that premarital sex among teens is good and if the unintended consequence invariably happens, there is a perfectly reasonable answer = abortion. Sick.
